Time to plan Christmas advent!
The Christmas season always seems to come upon us all of a sudden! This can make it quite hard to have our advent activities sorted in time. After several years of pretty low key versions, I’ve decided to go back to the original one we started with for the benefit of our younger family members. They’ve yet to experience the fun and excitement of a Christmas advent calendar involving interesting parcels to unwrap and special activities to do on specific days.
So the one we’re going back to this time comes from this blog – although she now has three different versions to choose from, and the activities and resources seem to have changed a bit.
The ones entitled “Genesis to Jesus” and “The Birth of Jesus” both contain elements of what we used initially, although what we used was much more simple and included readings from children’s Bibles on many of the days. I like how the Genesis one covers the whole story of redemption, placing the birth of Jesus nicely in context. There are 24 days of readings and activities such as making crowns and listening to various songs. The version we did originally included fun gifts such as:
- glow in the dark stars, sunflower seeds to plant (creation story)
- paper people to decorate as characters
- Christmas decorations – jewels (wise men) and ‘joy’ one – reuse each year
- Candles (reuse)
- Candy canes
- Stars to decorate
- Cookie cutters (reuse)
- Sticker and activity books
So if you try one of these advent versions, you could add in some of these fun gifts and activities.
Here is my summary of other advent ideas that we’ve tried as a family also, plus this cool idea.
Kids love it when we make the most of the Christmas season! It’s all part of creating memories and traditions to treasure as a family.
