Edible Book Day 2022

It’s that time of year again! Probably the highlight of our kids’ homeschooling calendar is the Edible Book Day on April 1st. This year with the restrictions, AHE are not hosting a big event but instead encouraging families to get together and do their own smaller versions. It’s easy to participate in and lots of fun! Basically it involves your child picking a book they have enjoyed and coming up with an edible way to represent it. They could recreate something from the story, e.g. an edible model of a character or place, or perhaps try to make some of the food mentioned in the story, or even come up with a clever way of representing the title of the book. There are plenty of examples on the Edible Book Day Facebook page.

Have a look at some of the ones we have done in the past:

  • 2021
  • 2020 (the online version)
  • 2019 (the spider cake in the main photo was Grace’s)

It’s much more fun if you can share your creations with other families, so consider planning an Edible Book Day event. All it requires is some space to display the entries (e.g. on your dining table) and some plates or serviettes. Make sure you allow plenty of time to first admire everyone’s designs, then to enjoy eating them! AHE will even send you some certificates to print off if you desire. Traditionally there are no first prizes, just a funny certificate for each entrant, but I reckon it would be quite fun to all vote for the best entry! If you need anything else to fill the time, a simple literature quiz is always good value too. If you send your entries in to the Edible Book Day Facebook page they will be displayed there for even more people to admire.
