Order out of chaos
In the last 3 months since our house move it feels as if we have constantly been in a cycle of tidiness – messiness – tidiness.
My husband and I both like a certain order and tidiness in our house, so we attempted to give everything its own place as soon as possible after moving. However, there have been numerous purchases and acquisitions of furniture to aid in setting up the new space. Every time a new piece of furniture or equipment arrives these things happen:
- Excitement about the new addition (mainly from me)
- Disarray in the space to which it is destined as we remove previous items and begin unpacking the new
- Mess comprised of cardboard and plastic and disordered tools in the item’s destination as furniture takes shape
- Pile of cardboard and plastic in the garage waiting for space to be free in the bins outside and sometimes old items to sell or repurpose elsewhere
It struck me each time this cycle occurred how a certain amount of mess and disorder was needed before order could be restored – including me dropping the ball on the homeschooling stuff while trying to sort things out again. If I was the philosophical type this is where I’d pontificate about how this represents people and life! No pain, no gain etc etc. But really I’m just a mum trying to bring order and efficiency to my home – bit by bit.
So I suppose I’ll have to accept that every time I want to create a little more order in our home, I’ll first have to deal with a bit of mess.
