Letter Writing
I don’t know how you’re all feeling, but to me this lockdown really seems to be dragging on! While it can be pretty depressing being stuck at home, there have nevertheless been some highlights. For our kids, one of those has been the joy of writing and receiving letters.
Since about the 3rd week of lockdown, our kids have been exchanging letters and handmade gifts with some good friends who live close by. The gifts have been getting more complex each time! Whenever a new package arrives in our letterbox, there is such excitement and pleasure. The kids relish reading through the letters (even though they have recently chatted over Skype!) and eagerly peruse the array of trinkets. Today’s package even included some baking!
Seeing as we live so close, we obviously don’t actually post the letters but just drop them in each other’s letterboxes. This in itself is an occasion for excitement! Spotting the ‘dropoff’ is all part of the fun, and getting a car ride is now a novelty. While it definitely doesn’t make up for actual social contact, letter writing has been a bright spot in an otherwise rather dull period.
And the bonus in all of this, is that the kids are actually practising their writing without being aware of it! Homeschooling win!
