Homeschool activities and outings

There are so many fantastic activities and outings to choose from when you’re homeschooling! We haven’t tried too many of the one-off ones in the past because of cost and clashes with other commitments, but this term we signed up for two special trips. If you’re in Auckland it’s worth checking out the Homeschool Outings webpage for upcoming events!

Sailing

The first new activity we tried was sailing at Bucklands Beach. Since it was only available for kids aged from 8-13, just Grace and Alex were eligible to participate. They both loved the experience! What made it even more special was the timing – it ended up happening right in the middle of all the America’s Cup racing. While I don’t think they quite understood all the technicalities and sailing jargon, they seemed to get a feel for how to maneuver the little boat both upwind and down.

Snowplanet

Today Grace and Alex and Jessica all tried out skiing for the first time at Snowplanet. After the initial stress and panic to get their gear sorted quickly, they made it out onto the snow. There were a couple of incidents such as skis coming off and one child accidentally going all the way to the top of the hill (and subsequently needing to be brought down by an instructor!) Despite those, the three of them all had a great time and did seem to be getting the hang of it by the end of the two hours.

On both outings, it was enjoyable to sit and watch the kids learning new skills and having new experiences – in fact I was a little jealous at not being able to join in! While the next few terms might be fairly quiet ones (with a new addition on the way) we will certainly be looking forward to more adventures in the future.
