Fairs and exams
For some reason unbeknownst to me, the kids have spent most of this week putting on ‘fairs’ and writing exams for each other! Random I know.
The “Merryton Fair”
The first fair, dubbed “The Merryton Fair” was designed out in the backyard by Grace and Alex for the younger kids. Earlier in the day they gave out invitations and then after finishing their school work they spent a decent amount of time setting up an elaborate fair entryway. This was comprised of two precarious stacks of outdoor chairs with towels hanging across the top. It was actually quite grand in its design and reminiscent of a circus entryway! Meanwhile, the younger kids were sequestered inside the house with the curtains closed to hide the surprise from view.
One of the attractions on offer was a ‘train ride’, aka being pushed around on a trike. But to give it authencity there was a line of cones showing where to wait for your turn.
Neatly lined up along the side of the house were cricket bats and balls, and on the trampoline there was a moon hopper to bounce on (strictly one at a time apparently). Around the corner was a scooter that you could be pushed around on while crouching (?!) A bike was available for riding, a Frisbee for throwing and bubbles were blown by all.
So really the entire fair experience, which generated an inordinate amount of excitement, was about using their imagination to turn our ordinary play equipment into a fun event! The fair experience was topped off with a picnic of scones and jam.
Fair number 2
The next day saw a repeat of the fair craze, but this time it was an inside version thanks to the (much needed) rain. I heard Duck Duck Goose being played and shows being performed but it seemingly couldn’t beat the previous day’s festivities. I was surprised to reach the top of the stairs (in search of a pair of socks) to find my way blocked by another elaborately constructed entryway! This one formed with barstools and covered in blankets held together by pegs.
By the sound of it, there is yet another fair planned for this afternoon! What wonders will be displayed today?
Exams
All the kids (except Isabella) have been setting and sitting exams for each other this week, even 4 year old Sophia who can’t write or read yet!
The last one I looked at (written by Grace for Alex) was actually pretty long! Something like 20 pages. She included Maths, Reading Comprehension and Writing sections. It’s funny how excited they are to sit each others made up exams! If only there was as much enthusiasm for their ordinary work.
Alex’s exam for Grace had ridiculously long addition problems and Sophia’s made up exam required Grace to trace over zig-zags, count how many bananas she (Sophia) had drawn, count some random numbers, tick something and write a number!
The story Alex wrote for Grace’s exam was hilarious, about a naughty boy reluctantly doing his schoolwork. I might need to type it up to share!
I love the imagination and creativity that drives such random play – it’s probably one of the best things about being stuck at home with no activities to go to!
