Be Encouraged

Today I listened to a podcast from Sarah Mackenzie of Read Aloud Revival. It was titled “10 Homeschooling Mistakes I’ve Made (so you can avoid them)”. It was fantastic! So encouraging and so easy to relate to. I highly recommend giving it a listen.

Many of her points struck a chord with me, but one in particular was the mistake of “thinking that my homeschool needs to be extraordinary”. She talked about how we mums can tend to look at all the different amazing homeschooling mums around the world, and meld them together in our minds into some totally unattainable superwoman who we can never live up to! Comparisons are never very helpful, especially when they are based on fiction rather than reality.

I also appreciated her points about not making our role as a teacher more important than our role as mum, and not being so hard on ourselves. She emphasised the importance of reading aloud (of course) and of having a relaxed and happy parent and homeschooling environment. All so helpful to hear, and so necessary to be reminded of over and over again!
